A new month is here! And while August may mean back-to-school for the younger set… there are some of us who don’t have to worry about that! So here are a few hot topics hot off-the-press that we think you will appreciate as the hot days hammer on…
MILESTONE CELEBRITY BIRTHDAYS
This is a fun one! Did you know that Marcia Gay Harden, Magic Johnson, Matthew Perry, Shelley Long and Richard Gere are among the big stars who are facing BIG birthdays this month?! That’s right… check out this read in AARP to see who is having a milestone birthday and what that magic number is.
TIME TO TALK TEETH
Most people do not know this – but they probably should: the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) has designated August as Dental Implant Month. This is an especially important area of discussion for seniors who are likely to have increased dental health needs due to mouth changes associated with aging. Ironically, older adults are the most likely to need implants but the least likely to have dental insurance and benefits that other populations may have. Read more HERE.
We often think of vaccinations as something that is of concern to kids, however, vaccines can be especially important for older adults too. In honor of August serving as National Immunization Awareness Month, we wanted to provide access to a few resources that can help you engage in conversations with your medical professional(s) about your health risk and what vaccines may be of benefit to you. The National Public Health Information Coalition offers an online, adult vaccine assessment HERE; the CDC also features a list of recommended vaccines for adults aged 50 and over and adults with health conditions HERE.
MAKING YOUR VOICE HEARD
While we do not talk politics on our blog (phew!), we know that political discussions are heating up around the nation as the 2020 Election approaches. Next Avenue (‘Where Grown Ups Keep Growing: Part of the PBS System’) has just published survey results of their readers (aged 50+) when asked which election issues matter most to them. Read more HERE to see if these topics are top of mind to you… or consider if they should be in the month to come as media coverage continues in these areas.
Cheers to a new month with new dreams, new memories made and new friends too,
