It’s a new month and you know what that means… a whole new series of awareness themes are emerging! You probably know that there are health awareness topics for every month of the year, but did you know that one of the topics for May impacts 75 million people in the United States?! That’s right, 1 in every 3 adults has high blood pressure, and that is why we are drawing attention to this topic in honor of National High Blood Pressure Month (sponsored by the Centers For Disease Control and recognized by the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute).
Let’s start with the good news about high blood pressure: About 7 in 10 adults with high blood pressure use medication to manage it; since 1999 – more people over aged 60 have become aware of their condition and started receiving treatment for it; there are many steps you can take to prevent and control this condition!
The not-so-great news is that 7 out of 10 people who have their first heart attack have high blood pressure; about 8 out of every 10 people who have their first stroke have high blood pressure; 7 out of 10 people with chronic heart failure have high blood pressure; the condition causes nearly 1,000 deaths per day (as of 2013 data).
While there is a TON (more like 10 tons!) of pages of data available about high blood pressure risk factors, causes, treatments and effects – our goal today is to remind you to talk with your doctor about your blood pressure goals, steps you can take to improve it and to share resources that provide further information. Unfortunately, high blood pressure is known as the ‘silent killer’ because it often has no warning signs or symptoms. This is why awareness and professional medical follow-up are a life-saving necessity when it comes to diagnosis and management. Note that this is not intended to serve as medical advice in any way – and is simply for informational purposes.
