In my decades of working with seniors, there is an unfortunate thing that happens when people talk about the word downsizing. They feel embarrassed. Ashamed. Discouraged. Pressured. And every time, it breaks my heart – here’s why.
In the majority of couples and individuals must downsize, they have been thinking about it for some time. They knew they would need to move at some point, but just hadn’t gotten around to it yet. But then some unexpected incident happens and suddenly the time is now. A broken hip. An ill family member. An unexpected financial obligation. It often happens, and always at the worst possible time.
That is why when I came across an article on Next Avenue about pre-downsizing, I could not believe we had not covered this before! We had always talked about not waiting until it is too late… but we have never before mentioned that you can use the ‘P’ word instead of the ‘D’ word. When you pre-downsize instead of downsize, you can accomplish 3 important things.
#1: Maintain Control. There is so much more that is in control when time is on your side. By downsizing before you have to, you can often manage the tasks of downsizing the way you want and need to.
#2: Reduce Stress. Instead of having to clean out two rooms per day, you can pace yourself (just do not stop!). Plus, if you hit roadblocks such as who will haul what or when the relatives will come to get their chosen items, you have much more flexibility. It is so much less stressful to work within a process of several months than several hours.
#3: Create Conversation. I have yet to see a downsizing process that did not involve some tough conversations. From where the next place of residence would be, to who would become the proud owners of great grandmas heirloom jewelry, pre-downsizing enables you to have the conversation rather than rush the decision.
These are just a few of the many reasons why downsizing before you have to is something to truly consider in 2020. To read all 8 reasons that inspired this Senior Spotlight, please read “ Don’t Need to Downsize Yet? Great. Start Now.”
In all sincerity, I hope that this week’s blog has not alarmed you, but simply reaffirmed the importance of having a plan. You can even take many of the steps of downsizing without having to move… and make a huge impact in the process down the road. It is never too soon to do what you need to do before you have to do it!
