Senior Spotlight: Travel Inspiration Near & Far

Do you want to see the world or take a ‘trip’ a few miles from home?

Spring is almost here, and summer will be following close behind; is it just us or do those seasons make you want to get out & about? Travel is a key retirement goal for 63-65% of those aged 50 and older, according to wealth management surveys. Benefits of travel extend far beyond the fun, as trips increase activity levels, promote social connectivity, and support cognitive stability and confidence. Therefore, we are dedicating this week’s blog to a few travel ideas to inspire your own best life in the months to come.

‘Sea’ The World

Travel by cruise ship is a convenient, all-inclusive way for seniors to ‘sea’ the world. Just a few days ago, The Travel published an article on the 10 best cruise lines for seniors. Many of these cruise lines offer specialty meals to meet dietary needs or preferences, some offer increased accessibility for those with mobility/sight/hearing challenges, and all offer amazing experiences and amenities. Examples include Broadway-style entertainment, specialized small-group or intimate experiences, world class dining, high-end casinos and even art workshops and culinary classes. While some lines cater to a luxury lifestyle, others opt for maximum affordability.

Crowd Pleasers

If you have high hopes for travel but are lacking a partner or friend to join you, travel groups can give you the best of both worlds. Travel + Leisure magazine compiled a list of 14 senior-friendly travel groups last summer, featuring ‘travel experiences as diverse as their clients.’ Travel groups offer the opportunity to meet others who share your interests, and often plan all the details for you so all you have to do is show up! From ‘Walking The World’ where hikers cover 4-8 miles a day in immersive destinations, to ‘Road Scholar’ tours for lifelong learners to food and wine adventures, there are near endless options. Convenience + company = ultimate travel goals.

No Place Like Home

Not all of us have the desire or the budget to plan a grand adventure. But you can still enjoy the benefits of travel by creating experiences at home that feel like vacation. The Holiday Senior Living publication suggests planning a ‘staycation’ just as you would a vacation. Create trip goals such as where to get a manicure, what trail you wish to explore, or which beach you’re going to take in the sun at. Even planning a day trip in Carmel or meeting friends for lunch and shopping at Santana Row in San Jose offers a great break in your daily routine. The Bay Area especially has countless nature trails, museums, cultural centers, fine dining options and beach towns that are ideal inspiration.

Do any of the above travel ideas appeal to you? What is the #1 thing that matters most to you in a trip? Feel free to share your upcoming excursions or favorite past ones!

Happy trails,
