Senior Spotlight: 3 Can’t Miss Reads For Older Adults

Federal financial protection, caregiver relief & colon cancer prevention!

Our Senior Spotlight this week covers not one, not two – but THREE trending topics that the Bobbi Decker team could not wait to share. As we scoured the headlines for the most informative and cutting-edge lifestyle tips, we found 3 new areas of interest that we feel our readers could benefit from.

The articles highlighted below come from Next Avenue and AARP and are designed to support the proactive health needs of all aging adults, as well as address the future of ‘bad advice’ from financial professionals and target a key solution to caregiver stress. Whether you can benefit from one piece of new info or a few – we hope you find something to relate to and make your life healthier and happier.

Let's Talk About Colorectal Screening After 75

Nobody wants to talk about colonoscopies, but they are a life saving screening tool; if found in early stages, colon cancer patients have a 90% survival rate for 5+ years. The Colon Cancer Coalition is working hard to separate myth from truth in many headlines that devalue the benefits of colonoscopy and has affirmed that on-time screening reduces colorectal cancer death by at least 50%. The CDC reports that nearly 70% of colon cancers could be prevented with increased screening. Unfortunately, much of the advocacy for disease prevention is targeted at those age 45-50, yet research shows the incidence of colon cancer in those aged 75-79 is 4x higher! Read more about why screening matters for all age groups and what the current policy recommendations are here.

AARP Applauds Federal Rule To Protect Retirement Savers From Bad Advice

Great news for those with retirement savings plans! Just yesterday, the Department of Labor finalized a new federal rule that was strongly advocated for by AARP. This new regulation which takes effect on September 23, 2024 requires that “all financial advisers providing advice on 401(k)s, individual retirement accounts (IRAs) and annuities will have a ‘fiduciary duty’ to put retirement savers’ interests first.” A previous ‘loophole’ allowed “some financial professionals to steer retirement savers toward products that offer higher commissions or other perks and often come with high fees, rather than toward investments that best meet the clients’ needs.” Learn more here.

The Missing Piece of Managing Caregiver Stress

Caregiver stress has unfortunately become more of a buzz word than a true area of focus and concern. We have all seen (and many experienced) caregiver burnout, been a part of the sandwich generation or received lectures on self-care – but no one really talks about how that plays out. An article published last week on Next Avenue highlights the importance of Nervous System Regulation (NSR), and the role that stress plays in making us feel unsafe and triggering our flight or fight response. Solutions include recognizing when our body has slipped into survival mode and utilizing tools such as gentle yoga, EFT taping, human connection and more. Explore the concept and explanation in full here.

We hope that one of these reads supports your own best, healthiest version of you. As spring brings new growth – may we carry that theme into our own renewal too.

Cheers,
