Senior Spotlight: A 2023 Global Retirement Update

Did you know that over 440,000 US retirees are drawing Social Security abroad?

Offshore retirement trends are a hot topic that the Bobbi Decker team has followed for years, even exploring some of the highest-ranking countries and property developments in person (we have SO many amazing photos!). While the pandemic paused some of the global real estate activity, overseas movement is picking up again. Next Avenue just released a read with findings from two new lists, Stevens' International Living (IL) and Peddicord's Live and Invest Overseas, which reveal the best places to live abroad based on reader input plus on the ground correspondents.

If you’ve seen our blogs on this list before, you will not be surprised that Costa Rica and Panama rank highly, however, newcomers to the list include several European locales on account of the strong US dollar making European living ‘more of a bargain’ according to Next Avenue.

Out of 16 countries on the International Living list, 5 of the top 10 are in Europe: Portugal (No. 1), Spain (No. 6), Greece (No. 7), France (No. 8) and Italy (No. 9). Long-standing Panama is No. 3, Ecuador is No. 4, Costa Rica is No. 5 and Colombia is No. 10.

Peddicord’s Live and Invest Overseas list reveals many similarities, including ranking Portugal as No. 1 citing ‘a low cost of living, easy residency, tax incentives for foreign residents, great food, more sunshine than anywhere else in Europe’ and much more. Mexico comes in at No. 2, Belize at No. 3, Northern Cyprus No. 4 and also shares International Living’s ranking of Thailand as No. 9.

The commonalities among what publishers call the winning spots are places where retirees can live comfortably, enjoy warm weather, obtain visas fairly easily (though patience is still a virtue in some places!) and find camaraderie in other expats. Safety, accessible and affordable healthcare as well as countless food and lifestyle amenities are also critical factors.

We encourage you to read the just-published read from Next Avenue here and keep your mind open to the kind of retirement you seek and where you might (unexpectedly!) find it.

All my best,

Bobbi

Happy 4th of July! The Bobbi Decker Team would like to start off by wishing you all weekend celebrations that are safe, memorable and meaningful! As we welcome the holiday that commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s birth, we deeply honor our freedoms. The 4th of July typically represents the core values of freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the right to pursue happiness. As we embrace all that is possible when we let freedom ring, may we also be mindful of the impact of not honoring one another’s differences.
