Senior Spotlight: A Reimagined Retirement

Rest & relaxation are no longer the goal in retirement... so what is?

While we all know that retirement lifestyles are changing, a new study by Edward Jones & Age Wave defines how. According to the report titled “Longevity and the New Journey of Retirement”, the difference lies in the perspective of rest & relaxation vs. a new chapter and purpose.

11,000 adults aged 45+ who are retired or within 10 years of retirement have reported that:

| Retirement for their parents looked like an extended vacation, a winding down or ‘the beginning of the end’

| Retirees today consider this time in life as a whole new chapter, filled with possibilities and a new definition of purpose

| Only 27% of those surveyed viewed retirement as a time for rest & relaxation, while 55% fell into the ‘new chapter’ perspective

| Almost 3 in 5 respondents planned to work in retirement as part of the ‘longevity equation’; on a practical level, most of those planning to live to 90 cannot afford to stop working at 65

| 77% of retirees felt a responsibility to help future generations; this figure jumped to 83% among the newly retired

| Age Wave Chief Executive Ken Dychtwald revealed that the underlying shift in today’s retirement mindset is one of enthusiasm – even feelings that this could be the best time of their lives

How are you imagining retirement? Is it a combination of rest, purpose & play? Is there a little work or a lot of travel involved? However retirement looks & feels to you, remember that it is yours. You can reimagine it any time - and have an evolving definition of what this stage of life feels like to you.
