Senior Spotlight: Best of 2024

Our readers know best – and here is what articles they enjoyed the most!

What a year! 2024 was full of ups and downs, highs and lows and good news and… at times not so good. As ‘bloggers’ (we prefer to be known as 'information advocates'!) our mission is to weed through the noise and write about the topics that are most beneficial to you and your quality of life as you age. (And you aren’t on that train alone – last we checked, we weren’t getting any younger either!). As we move forward together, we find it imperative to grow our own knowledge base and to share ways that we can all help each other and help ourselves

Below we have featured our ‘Top 5 Senior Spotlights of 2024’, based on reader feedback and social media engagement. Enjoy!

#1: Inclusive Travel

In one of our most popular blogs of 2024, we talked about inclusive travel and not letting two wheels limit you to four walls! This blog features four travel agencies dedicated to travel for those with accessibility needs and summarizes the types of trips offered. A must read!

#2: Aging + Social Work

We talk about something that is just not talked about enough: geriatric case management. This read explores how social workers can play a key role in helping maintain quality of life as we age (9+ ways!) and how to find one.

#3: Staying Healthy In The Heat

While we have recently shared tips for coping with the cold, one of our most ‘liked’ Senior Spotlights this year was one we wrote this summer. Our July heat wave imparted upon us the importance of sharing the 5 key ways that heat is harder on the body as we get older. Learn about heat exhaustion vs. heat stroke in this blog, as well as proactive steps to take to stay safe when temperatures rise.

#4: Building Your Balance Bank

This bank isn’t one made of money – it’s one that you can fill for free with time and intention. In ‘Building Your Balance Bank’, we define what good balance is, what critical role it plays in healthy aging and how to both test & improve your balance.

#5: 10 Benefits of Gardening As You Age

Personally, I have found gardening to be therapeutic both as something to do and something to view (ask me about Buddy's healing garden)! Dozens of sources agree, and this article shares 10 benefits of gardening from 6 reputable resources. A great primer as we prepare to plan our spring gardens (it’s never too soon!).

BONUS: Aging In California Resources Guide Now Updated

It’s more than worth noting that midway through 2024, the California Department of Aging launched a new toolkit focused on better organized information and tips to support the most common questions and challenges that older adults in California are facing. Bookmark this one for the changing needs of you and those around you.
