Monday Market Update: Walkable Communities Offer A Higher Quality of Life

A new survey from NAR® reveals just how in demand walkable communities are.

Location. Location. Location. There is perhaps no more revered, factual or timeless phrase in real estate than this as you can always change your home’s features but rarely ever change where it is! So what exactly is it that people want to be close to… WHERE exactly do they want to live?

A poll conducted by the National Association of Realtors (NAR)® in April of 2023 reveals that walkability is an extremely high priority among 2,000 adults surveyed in the 50 largest metros. Take a look at these statistics:

| Respondents in walkable communities are more likely to be very satisfied with their overall quality of life.

| 79% said being within an easy walk of other places and things, such as shops and parks, is very/somewhat important.

| Over 30% of Gen Z and Millennials surveyed are willing to “pay a lot more” to live in a walkable community.

| 53% of ALL respondents indicting that they would prefer to live in an attached dwelling (apartment, condo, townhome) rather than a detached single-family home if it meant they would have an easy walk to shops and restaurants.

| 85% said sidewalks and places to walk are very/somewhat important.

| 65% said having public transport nearby is very/somewhat important.

How about you? Do you prefer to live within walking distance to shops and eateries? Are you happy to walk in your neighborhood or prefer access to nature trails?

Cheers to walking wherever you want to go!
