Senior Spotlight: 5 (Surprising!) Cities With The Biggest Population Gains Over Age 65

Plus, the 5 cities that retirees are bidding farewell to the fastest.

When you think of retirement locations, chances are that cities in Arizona and Florida come to mind. But is this where the majority of retirees are fleeing today? A new study from Market Watch reveals that the cities experiencing a ‘boom’ of Baby Boomers are not the places you would expect but have some amazing benefits you may wish to consider.

Researchers explained that “The reason traditional retirement locations didn’t make the list was that those markets were already dominating the retirement scene and didn’t see explosive growth.” Furthermore, many traditional sunbelt towns have become too pricey or crowded to live in. Regions on the list feature more senior living options, better medical support, bigger senior resident communities and competitive rents. Virginia and North Carolina offer the added advantages of a balanced quality of life – being near both major universities and top medical centers.

On the other side of the coin, there are 5 cities in which Baby Boomers are exiting at the highest rates – and you will not be shocked that two of them are in Silicon Valley. Cities on the list below have less than desirable costs and quality of life considerations for retirees. For example, San Francisco housing costs are 202% of the national average; healthcare in Seattle is 31% higher than the national average; groceries in New York are nearly 30% more than the national average.

Do any of the cities on either list surprise you? Where would you love to retire… and what steps can you take to make it happen? The last quarter of the year can be a reflective season to prepare for a new year with new goals ahead. Hope you have fun in the process! 😉
