Senior Spotlight: May Health Awareness

5 key health awareness topics to note this month!

If you follow our blog, then you know that our Senior Spotlight often features a key health awareness topic that we feel is of utmost importance for senior health and well-being. As we prepared our research for May, we realized that there was not simply one or two important awareness issues – but far more! See all May Health Awareness topics here – and note that we have identified our key 5 with links to more information below.

Arthritis Awareness Month: Did you know that arthritis is the #1 leading cause of disability in the United States? It affects 1 in 4 adults and hundreds of thousands of children in the US. Find all the facts plus invaluable podcasts, webinars and e-books online via the Arthritis Foundation

High Blood Pressure Education Month: Over 70% of those aged 60 and older have high blood pressure. With May also being High Blood Pressure Education Month, be sure to visit the NIH education page which features fact sheets and resources related to measuring blood pressure, what to ask your doctor, plus the critical link to heart disease and resources to help

Mental Health Awareness Month: It’s no coincidence that Mental Health and Older Americans Month are both in May. The American Society On Aging urges us all to learn about older adult mental health so that we can be aware of the signs and appropriate ways to offer support and assistance. Learn more here

American Stroke Month: Up to 80% of strokes can be prevented. In honor of American Stroke Month, learn how to act F.A.S.T., see the NEW Heart & Stroke Helper® App and view countless resources from the American Heart Association here

Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Cumulative UV exposure puts older adults at higher risk of diagnosis and death from skin cancer. As we gear up for summer, please be sure to read about how to protect yourself from one of the most preventable cancers in existence. Protecting and checking your skin are two key ways to save lives; please read more from the Skin Cancer Foundation here

Happy 4th of July! The Bobbi Decker Team would like to start off by wishing you all weekend celebrations that are safe, memorable and meaningful! As we welcome the holiday that commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s birth, we deeply honor our freedoms. The 4th of July typically represents the core values of freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the right to pursue happiness. As we embrace all that is possible when we let freedom ring, may we also be mindful of the impact of not honoring one another’s differences.
