Monday Market Update: Have You Seen State-By-State Report Cards?
The top (and bottom!) grades are in for affordability & homebuilding!
With students back from spring break and the school year drawing to a close in just 6 weeks… grades have been top of mind for many families. But did you know that there is a new nationwide report card that has nothing to do with schools and everything to do with housing? It’s true, last week Realtor.com®’s economic research team released a new national housing report card grading each state’s response to the housing crisis.
Only 13 grades of “A” and ‘B’ were assigned, and all of those were to states in the South or Midwest. The seven ‘F’ grades handed out were all in the West and Northeast – places where prices tend to be higher and land zoning regulations are stricter.
Below you will find a graphic from
Realtor.com® that lists the 10 best states for homebuilding and affordability.
Notably, California is absent from this list and actually ranks as one of the lowest states for affordability and new builds. We do not share this to discourage you (I mean – we live here too!), but to keep up with the spirit of why this report card was created in the first place – to keep the conversation going about affordability issues and inventory challenges. The United States is currently facing a gap in supply of 4 million homes. If we do not talk about the status of where we are at, we are less equipped and empowered to do something about it.
