Senior Spotlight: National Donate Life Month

Did you know you are never too old to register as an organ donor?

April has been an amazing month, and it is also one that celebrates the gift of life through organ donation. As the designated “Donate Life” month in the United States since 2004, this is a time which honors the people who have given the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation. It also celebrates the lives that have been saved and healed because of a donor’s generosity.

While most people believe you must be young to both give and receive an organ or tissue donation, the reality is that individuals in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and older have donated and received organs. (One of the oldest organ donors was 95 years old and saved over 20 people through tissue and skin donation). According to the Health Resources & Services Administration, about 64% of all the people who received organ transplants were 50 or older; over 23% of all receiving patients were 65 or older (data last reviewed February 2025).

The bottom line: there are over 100,000 patients on the national organ transplant list and those who register to be a donor (at any age!) may help! 85% of these individuals need a kidney – which is part of the living organ donation program. Approximately 6,500 living donation transplants take place each year.
