Monday Market Update: Just Say No To These Paint Must-Dos
Color outside the lines by breaking these design ‘rules’.
The world is full of what you should do, could do and are supposed to do – right? But sometimes we are following rules and we don't even know why! Real Simple recently published an article about stepping outside the box when it comes to paint tips – and we think these ‘rules' are all worth breaking! See the 5 paint ideas of the past that you can ignore – and enjoy designing your home on your terms! 😉
#1: Paint Your Built In Bookcases White.
FALSE. White built-ins might historically be the safest color choice, but designers state that colored shelving and cabinets truly elevate your space. Suggestions include blue and green earth tones, or painting built-ins an accent color that matches the room’s textiles or furnishings.
#2: Trim Color Should Contrast With Paint Color.
FALSE. Did you know that the design trend of contrasting trim and walls was actually a way to show off an owner’s wealth in early American and Victorian eras, as paint was considered a luxury? Today’s designers opt for ‘color drenching’ and seamlessly blending trim into walls to evoke calm and simplicity.
#3: Lighter Colors Make Smaller Spaces Seem Bigger.
FALSE. Designers reveal that the opposite is true – darker colors in a small space create a sense of airiness; an even better idea is choosing two deep shades within the same color palette. Must see to believe!
#4: All Ceilings Should Be White.
FALSE. White ceilings stemmed from the days before modern lighting, as daylight and older fixture types depended on white ceilings to reflect and spread light. With current electrical innovations and recessed fixtures, the sky is the limit with what colors you can use. Just be intentional with your choices as overhead tones can feel more intense.
#5: Avoid Painting Textured Walls.
FALSE. While painting textured walls may not be easy due to dimensional surfaces, it can be impactful! Colored paint can actually enhance the look and feel of linen and grass cloth type walls and is more affordable than removing the texture.
Cheers to choosing paint colors and styes that work for you!
