Senior Spotlight: An Intro To Retirement

Next Avenue reveals why orientations are not just for schools!

When you think of orientation, you probably think of an introduction to school or work. Your last orientation may have been in higher education or your last job. But what if there was an orientation to retirement? What if someone sat down and told you what lies ahead?

Next Avenue recently published an article posing this question, even joking about the idea of "Retirement Orientation" classes — like "Should I Follow My Grandkids on Social Media?" "Intro to Bird Feeders" or "Advanced Pickleball." But the real issues retirees face involve more than hobbies and even money – but what about the key drivers of purpose and health?

Check out these 3 key themes that Next Avenue suggests as your own personal “Retirement Orientation”:

#1: Pause To Find Cause: Retirement is your time to truly reflect on your values and beliefs and focus on what is meaningful to you for personal growth and fulfillment at this stage of your life. Maybe that means you reignite your passion for animals and volunteer at the local animal shelter, or try that art class you’ve always wanted to enroll in. Set your sights to new heights… and fly!

#2: Explore Instead of Ignore: The reality is there are many gains in retirement – and losses too. Next Avenue explains that you do ‘lose’ things like “…your sense of identity, daily routine, social connection and mental stimulation.” You also lose employer-sponsored health coverage. This means that you need to explore how to fill the losses – with new gatherings and social routines, new day to day tasks and even new/adapted medical coverage. You got this – but don’t avoid it; meet the challenges HEAD ON!

#3: See To Your Health: Wellness and vitality are not naturally top of mind – and as we age, we face more health-related barriers. But with proper preventive care, consistent management of any chronic conditions and the adoption of intentional, healthy habits, you can live longer & live better (who recognizes that throwback to our TV days)?

If we had to focus on one retirement orientation “key” – it would be your health. Please be sure that as you plan for retirement, you focus on a truly healthy body, mind and spirit. Nothing matters more.

All my best,
