Monday Market Update: May Is National Moving Month
Unpacking one of life’s top stressors – the moving process!
Did you know that May is National Moving Month? This month kicks off the peak moving time of the year, which is late May through September – driven by school breaks, real estate turnover and great weather. Whether you move during the busiest time of year or slowest, moving is considered a top life stressor. While one blog cannot adequately minimize all obstacles related to moving, we wanted to provide some key resources to help explain the scope of the stressors and resources to help.
Moving Considerations
Adaptability: Even before you get to the organizational and physical tasks of moving, it’s a well-known emotional trigger. Moving is all about change and can evoke feelings of stress, anxiety, fear of the unknown, overwhelm, grief and fatigue. Learn more about the psychology of moving in this read from JK Moving Services.
Costs: The range of moving costs is HUGE, with moves costing $600 to $14,000! There are many factors that impact the cost of a move including but not limited to the distance of the move, whether it is in state or out-of-state, the amount and weight of belongings, how many movers are needed, what time of year it is, if packing and unpacking services are included and how much insurance coverage there is. Read a helpful breakdown from Forbes here.
Logistics: How soon should you start packing? What tasks do you need to complete even before filling boxes (such as donating & de-cluttering)? How much time should you allot per room? What items should you pack first and last? The Spruce offers a practical read on the top 5 (and most underrated!) moving tips from someone who has moved locally and internationally almost 25 times!
Legalities: Be sure to learn about the legal and ethical obligations associated with estimates for both California moves and interstate moves. Starting July 1, California moving companies must be licensed and regulated by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services. For interstate moves, the mover must be registered with the Federal government and have a U.S. DOT number.
Safety: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration offers a comprehensive website on protecting yourself from scams, spotting the red flags of moving fraud, managing property loss and determining value.
There is SO much more to moving but we don’t to add overwhelm to a topic that can already feel larger than life! Ultimately reframing the move by considering what you are gaining (rather than losing) and strategically navigating the process with your priorities and timeline are keys to success. Please be sure to let us know if you need further resources & support in this life transition that can really ‘move’ you!
