Senior Spotlight: National Blood Donation Month

All ages can help our nation’s blood shortage!

Did you know that every 2 seconds in the US, someone needs blood or platelets? And one blood donation can help save more than one life. You often hear of national blood shortages, and you can check your area’s current supply from America's Blood Centers here. In the West, most blood centers have a 1-2 day supply of blood and nearly 20% have only a 1-day supply or less. We share this with you because January is National Blood Donation Month!

While it is true that all ages may need blood at some point, it is a myth that we are ‘too’ old to donate blood at a certain age. While this article is not medical guidance and is for informational purposes only, we do want to share 3 key things to know about this life saving act!

#1: “I am too old to donate blood.” FALSE There is no upper age limit on blood donation; the key factor is meeting eligibility requirements at any age. AARP has even reported that older adults are less likely to experience side effects such as dizziness, bruising or fainting.

#2: “I take medication so I cannot donate blood.” FALSE. The American Red Cross states that “in almost all cases, medications will not disqualify you as a blood donor.” Your eligibility will be based on the reason that the medication was prescribed. As long as the condition is under control and you are healthy, blood donation is usually permitted.

#3: “I don’t know where to donate.” The great news is that finding places to donate blood is easier than ever! You can call 1-800-RED-CROSS, search the Red Cross website or the Stanford Blood Center online, or visit Vitalant

We hope you see that once again, age is just a number and has little impact on your ability to make a difference! If you are retired and would love to help save lives, please talk to your doctor and see if donating blood is right for you. Those facing life threatening injuries, blood disorders, anemia, countless forms of cancer and surgical complications will thank you!

With gratitude as a blood donor recipient myself,
