Labor Day 2026: Celebrating American Workers

It’s Labor Day 2026 and it’s an exciting time for many reasons. While it’s unofficially the end of summer and many are holding their last barbecues, it’s an ongoing recognition of the countless achievements of American workers. 

What Is Labor Day? 

As the United States Department of Labor summarizes, “Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.”

Prior to federal adoption, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and acknowledged in individual states. Early adopters of Labor Day were New York, Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Nebraska & Pennsylvania. 

Before Labor Day

Labor Day was established during the height of the Industrial Revolution. The nature of the work coupled with the lack of regulations resulted in dangerous, grueling and demanding conditions. Prior to Labor Day, there were few if any protections for workers, shifts of 10-14 hours a day were common, few breaks were not given, overtime was not typically paid and wages were low and lower for women and children. An estimated 35,000 workers a year died from work-related accidents and enclosed, poorly ventilated environments largely contributed to the spread of disease. 

Modern Labor 

The challenges of work today are much different than those of the industrial era. While working conditions and regulations are drastically more favorable, there are still challenges of digital burnout, an aging labor pool, wages keeping up with inflation and jobs being replaced by technology. Our Focus 

The Bobbi Decker Team would like to not only celebrate workers who have contributed to America’s success to date, but specifically those who are working today! Please note there are countless essential workers and people who contribute to society who do not get a day off – first responders (police, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses), retail and sales staff (grocery workers!), travel industry associates (those who work at airports & gas stations) and news reporters. There is one other profession that does not get a day off – parents! 



With a special focus on our first responders and military service members, the Bobbi Decker Team would like to express our deepest and most sincere gratitude to all who make our country a better, more productive place. To those who keep us healthy, who keep our grocery stores stocked and children educated – we thank you!
