Senior Spotlight: Emergency Preparedness Month
Key considerations for older adults, veterans & caregivers!
Happy September! Can you believe that the first month that signifies fall is here? While we often think of fall as a time of changing seasons and getting ready for holidays, it is also National Preparedness Month. Every September since 2004, FEMA’s Ready Campaign celebrates National Preparedness Month to encourage Americans to get ready for emergencies before disaster strikes.
The 2026 Theme
Ready.gov has coined the theme of National Preparedness Month 2026 as “Americans Stand Ready.” Per the US Department of Homeland Security, “This theme reflects the spirit of unity, resilience and resourcefulness that make our country strong. It’s a reminder that each of us can make a difference by taking proactive steps before a disaster strikes, and encouraging loved ones to do the same, Americans can contribute to the safety and security of the entire nation. Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility, and disasters and emergencies can happen at any time, anywhere, and sometimes without warning.”
Past Senior Spotlights On Emergency Preparedness For Older Adults
We believe that safety is an ongoing topic and learning opportunity. Over the years, we have compiled and revisited emergency preparedness tips for seniors from Ready.gov, the American Red Cross, the CDC and more. Check it out!
The National Weather Service
Since many disasters are weather-related, we also encourage you to visit the National Weather Service website for steps on learning your risks and responses, making a plan, building a supply kit and getting involved in getting your community ready!
AARP
As we often find, AARP has many articles and resources dedicated to the safety and preparedness planning needs of older adults. Here are just a few of the informative options: “Watch Our Disaster Preparedness Webinar,” “Emergency Preparedness Guide for Veterans,” “Winter Storm Preparedness and Resources,” & "Emergency Tips from FEMA’s Region 10 Community Preparedness Office.”
Thank you for your time and dedication to keeping yourself & those around you ready for anything!
Cheers to being better (and better prepared!) together,
