Senior Spotlight: National Preparedness Month Focuses On Older Adults

Seniors are at greater risk when it comes to emergencies – learn more in our new blog!

September is here… and marks the annual awareness campaign of National Preparedness Month! The 2023 theme is “Take Control in 1, 2, 3” and has a special focus on preparing older adults for disasters. The Department of Homeland Security reports that “older adults can face greater risks when it comes to the multitude of extreme weather events and emergencies we now face, especially if they are living alone, are low-income, have a disability, or live in rural areas.”

The good news is that being aware of the challenges that older adults face during disasters and emergencies means we know how to help! Ready.gov has created a NEW webpage designed just for older adults and preparedness. Check it out HERE.

FEMA also offers two flyers that are a great reference, we have included one below and you can access the more detailed brochure at this link.

If we had to summarize emergency preparedness for older adults in ONE word, it would be support.

Support those around you in preparing for an emergency and creating a supply kit and plan – NOW, not when the disaster happens.

Ensure that senior support is not limited to one person, but that your aging loved ones have access to a network of support that they can call on.

Remember that support is not a one-time event, but an on-going commitment to help even as needs, health status and circumstances change. For seniors, support systems need to be constantly re-assessed and re-strategized. National Preparedness Month marks the ideal time to do just that!

Happy Planning!
