Monday Market Update: Interior Design Trends 2025

New year, new designs. Here’s what to expect!

2025 is only 3 months (actually less!) away! As we prepare to reflect on 2024 and sink into the sanctuary our home provides for the holidays – take a look around. Are there any spaces in your home that could use a design update? Whether seeking a whole house refresh or just adjusting the focal point in a few key areas, we have some design trends that are expected to be big in the year to come.

As always, every designer and home style expert will have a different outlook on what is ‘in’ and what is ‘out’. Combined with personal tastes, varying budgets and existing home styles and there is NO way that every idea can (or should!) work for every home. Below we have coupled the top 5 ideas we’ve seen echoed throughout the various publications on this topic. Do any of these resonate with you?

#1: Leveled-Up Minimalism: While less clutter is still ‘in’, designers are talking about trends ranging from ‘minimalism with a cozy twist’  to ‘warm minimalism’ to even the talk of ‘maximalism’ in some circles. While we doubt that the abundance and excess of maximalism will take over the style scene – the bottom line is that stark minimalism and over-the-top scarcity of color and pattern is over.

#2: Textured Walls & Ceilings: Plain is in the past according to Decorilla, one of the many industry publications promoting transformation. With the idea that a focal point can have more to do with feel than look, expect to see an increase in decorative plaster finishes, wallpapered accent walls and even ceilings and resurgence in wood paneling. The idea is to add depth and visual interest via grounding focal points.

#3: Home Wellness Spaces: The post-covid era has renewed the prioritization of not just physical health – but mental health too. Wellness spaces in the home can cater to both as home gyms, yoga studios, meditation zones and spa-like bathrooms offer a retreat away from stressors right within your home.

#4: Artisanal & Handcrafted Touches: You can buy almost anything from a mass production line, but why would you want to? Platforms like Etsy and local vendor fairs make it easier than ever to shop local and buy something personal. Handmade items add character and craftsmanship to any space; items such as handcrafted ceramics, one-of-a-kind furniture and handwoven textiles can really add an unparalleled anchor to any room.

#5: Discreet Tech: We cannot talk about home design in Silicon Valley without talking about some of the ways that smart home functionality impacts design. Seamlessly integrating speakers, wireless charging furniture, voice controlled lighting and hidden cords is important in ensuring your home isn’t bombarded by the appearance of boxes and wires. The idea is to have it all – without seeing it all!

Runners-Up: These design trends are what we call ‘runners up’ in the 2025 design trends to watch: moody, color drenched rooms; indoor swings; pattern mixing, statement lighting & biophilic design (bringing the outdoors in!).

Happy designing,
