Monday Market Update: See The 10 Healthiest Cities In The US

Explore where the healthiest cities are & what defines them!

If you know our team, then you know that we believe health is the #1 priority of any lifestyle. If we do not have our health, we cannot have or enjoy anything else in life. Period. That’s why this recent read on Realtor.com® on ‘The 10 Healthiest—and Unhealthiest—Cities in the U.S.’ is so critical for us to share with you.

The article is a summary of a new study released by the personal finance website WalletHub. According to Realtor.com®, “WalletHub compared 182 of the most densely populated U.S. cities across four key categories: health care, food, fitness, and green space. These categories were then assessed using 41 indicators, including the premature death rate, cost of a medical visit, farmers markets per capita, healthy restaurants per capita, average cost of fitness club membership, parkland acres per capita, and quality of parks, among other factors.”

Before we reveal the healthiest cities, note that the unhealthiest cities had a few things in common. The 10 unhealthiest cities in the nation all reside in the South and Southwest, largely due to the worst scores in the food and fitness categories. Lack of access to nutritious food and to open space parks caused these cities to rank least healthy: Gulfport, MS; Shreveport, LA; Columbus, GA; and Laredo, TX. The latter two account for the worst health care scores in the nation.

Now the good news! See the ranking of the 10 healthiest cities in the country below; note that San Francisco is #1 and a total of 3 Golden State cities are on the list! San Francisco holds the record for the second lowest share of obese adults in the US, plus has a high consumption of fruits and vegetables. The city of San Francisco also spends more per capita on parks and metros than nearly all other major metros, is considered a highly walkable and bikeable area and has the healthiest restaurants per capita.

As huge fans of the island life, we also want to point out that Honolulu is cited as the #2 city for physical health and stands out as a fabulous city for mental health. Beach therapy anyone? Notable wellness indicators are the city’s number of farmers markets per capita, the most hiking trails and the highest levels of insurance coverage, 95% and 98% for the town’s adults and children respectively.

Did any of the cities on the list surprise you? Are there any cities you expected to be ranked in terms of top health? As always, your feedback is welcome & appreciated!

Cheers to the most important part of life – your health,
