Monday Market Update: Spring Cleaning (Don’t Do It All)

Keep things simple with one spring cleaning style.

Less is more – especially when it comes to adding on to your to-do list. If the thought of spring cleaning has you overwhelmed, try undertaking the task with this new approach featured in Houzz. Author Laura Gaskill breaks down spring cleaning into 6 different options – so you can pick the method that addresses your personal priorities.

Be sure to read ‘Choose Your Own Spring Cleaning Plan’ in full for a complete description!

#1: Bust Dust & Clutter. This form of spring cleaning is a tried-and-true classic. Remove stuff off surfaces, get rid of unwanted & un-needed items - then wipe it all down! Vacuuming behind rather than just around things is also a next-level cleaning tackle.

#2: Get Cooking. As the room in the house that gets the most use for most of us, it’s often the area that can benefit from the most attention. If you turn your spring-cleaning efforts to the kitchen only – you have the bandwidth to manage the fridge clean out, the drawers and cabinets, pantry (check those spice expiration dates!) and the appliances. Bonus: replace the pads on the feet of your kitchen chairs and legs of your table.

#3: Textile Refresh. This could involve a combo of laundering the shower curtains, pillow covers and small mats that you can wash at home, then arranging professional cleaning of carpets, couches, and larger area rugs.

#4: Go Green. Less chemicals, more reusables. This concept proposes that you switch over to natural cleansers (like baking soda and vinegar), minimize plastic by purchasing glass water bottles and cloth shopping bags and even adding in (or changing the filter on) your air purifier.

#5: Deep Clean. You might need an energy boost for this one; when is the last time you cleaned out your dryer hose and the area under the lint trap? Are you up to scrubbing behind the fridge and vacuuming the coils? Blinds, light fixtures, recycle bins… this challenge takes a close look at the items that are most overlooked.

#6: Exterior Only. Curate your own curb appeal… just for you! Hose down your siding, power wash the porch and sidewalk, wash the windows and if you are feeling motivated – how about re-staining the deck and mulching the flower beds?

Which spring cleaning style speaks to you? Have you already accomplished one of these? Completed an item on the list already? Whatever you do, please don’t do it all. Give yourself grace to clean your space on your terms, with no obligation to make it all perfect. Just make your home enjoyable and comfortable to your priorities.

You don’t want to get so busy living that you don’t have time to make a life…and enjoy it. 😉
