Senior Spotlight: AARP’s Winter Wisdom

3 articles highlighting warmth, health and a good book! ;)

The actual start of winter is just days away… but the chill in the air and the frost in the mornings is already here! As we scoured the latest headlines for topics to help us live longer and live better this week, we noticed three articles from AARP that are a perfect complement to what’s on our minds this time of year.

Below we offer a brief description and links of how to stay warm but spend less, which symptoms can help differentiate between some common viruses and what to read as you cozy up under a warm blanket; enjoy!

Did You Know: Nearly 75% of Americans worry about their home’s heating costs?

For seniors on a fixed income, a surging energy bill can be a big blow to your budget. But as you may have seen a few weeks ago on our blog, coping with cold weather is a growing challenge as we age for many reasons. In ‘5 Ways to Slash Your Home’s Heating Bills’, AARP shares 5 ways that you may be able to lower your heating costs by 20%. Definitely worth a read!

Did You Know: The seasonal flu, RSV and Covid-19 are all linked to increased hospitalizations and deaths in those age 65 and older?

Not all viruses are created equal, but if are an older adult, they all propose increased risk. We have no intention of scaring you, but we do encourage you to talk to your medical team and make educated decisions about which vaccines and treatments are right for you. In ‘Is It a Cold? The Flu? COVID? Or RSV?’, AARP helps identify the most distinguishing symptoms of each of the top 3 seasonal viruses (did you know there is even an over-the-counter single test for all three now?!). This is NOT intended to replace or serve as medical advice but is offered as information to help keep you aware of what to look for as the season of sniffles and sore throats marches on.

Did You Know: Nearly 40% of those aged 65 and older read something fort personal interest every day?

If you love cozying up on the couch with a good book – you are not alone! Close to half of seniors read every day, and nearly 70% of older adults report books as their favorite reading material! In ‘37 of Winter’s Best New Books to Get You Through the Chilly Season’, AARP shares a helpful list of over three dozen up and coming books in four categories. Which one looks like a winner to you?!

Cheers to a winter with all you need,

Happy 4th of July! The Bobbi Decker Team would like to start off by wishing you all weekend celebrations that are safe, memorable and meaningful! As we welcome the holiday that commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence and our nation’s birth, we deeply honor our freedoms. The 4th of July typically represents the core values of freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the right to pursue happiness. As we embrace all that is possible when we let freedom ring, may we also be mindful of the impact of not honoring one another’s differences.
