Senior Spotlight: How Baby Boomers Are Using AI
Enthusiasm & trust for AI varies by generation.
“Artificial intelligence or AI is no longer a future concept—it's already shaping how we work, learn and live.” (Stephen Kenney, University of Cincinnati)
Years ago you may recall that everyone would talk about the implications and possibilities of AI when it arrived. But since its popularity surged in 2023 with generative AI (such as ChatGPT), researchers have now gathered some data and conducted analysis on who is using it and how. And we are sure our readers will find it no surprise that different generations use AI in different ways!
Top AI users by generation are Generation Z and Millennials. Top AI users by career are startup founders, corporate leaders and college students. While you may think Baby Boomers have no interest in AI, that is far from the truth. However, they are the most selective and cautious in their use.
How Baby Boomers Use AI
- 20% of Baby Boomers use standalone AI tools
- 35% of Baby Boomers use AI features passively on other platforms
- 67% know about ChatGPT, but only 22% report high familiarity with it and other similar generative AI tools
- 50-68% of Baby Boomers report non-usage of AI
- 1 in 5 Baby Boomers reports using AI at least once per week
- 49% feel skeptical of it, while 32% feel hopeful about it
- Top Baby Boomers uses of AI are entertainment and lifestyle-related, since many in this age group are retired
- Common uses include using Alexa and Google Assistant to check the weather, play oldies, manage reminders and control smart appliances
- Boomers are also learning to interact with AI ‘chatbots’ for customer service needs – airlines, utility websites, online shopping support, etc.
Across generations, worker trust in AI is actually declining. AI adoption is accelerating, but confidence is collapsing,” reports Mara Stefan, VP of global insights at ManpowerGroup. Worker confidence in the use of AI has dropped 18% (based on a survey of 14,000 workers in 19 countries). The confidence gap is highest in Baby Boomers who are 35% less likely to trust and rely on AI use.
