Senior Spotlight: Veteran Health Care Expansion Starts March 5th

As you know, the Bobbi Decker Real Estate Team holds a special place in our hearts for all who have served. Therefore, we felt compelled to share and help spread the news about an expanded benefits option for veterans that begins March 5th, 2024. 

You may have heard of the PACT Act of 2022, which is a new law that expanded VA healthcare and benefits for those who served and were exposed to toxic substances and burn pits. Key components of the act include: an improved decision-making process for medical eligibility, initial and follow-up toxic exposure screenings, VA healthcare staff education & training on toxin exposure, research study requirements for certain combat zones and authorization of 31 new facilities to provide greater access to VA care. 

The act originally called for a phased in approach occurring over 8 years, however, just two days ago (February 26, 2024) VA announced an immediate eligibility beginning March 5th, 2024. The press release states that:

“All Veterans who were exposed to toxins and other hazards while serving in the military — at home or abroad — will be eligible to enroll directly in VA health care beginning March 5, 2024. This means that all Veterans who served in the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Global War on Terror, or any other combat zone after 9/11 will be eligible to enroll directly in VA health care without first applying for VA benefits. Additionally, Veterans who never deployed but were exposed to toxins or hazards while training or on active duty in the United States will also be eligible to enroll.”
