Monday Market Update: Are Traditional Kitchens Replacing Modern Vibes?
Warm wood tones and textured finishes are in for 2026.
Our Monday Market Updates are often about price trends and sales updates but also serve to keep you updated on home and lifestyle news too. This week, we wanted to share an emerging theme in 2026 related to the most popular and used room in your home – the kitchen!
While there has been a definitive era of modern, sleek kitchens with white and gray hues, a design revival is taking place that evokes all the feelings of our childhood kitchens. The ‘brown’ kitchen is no longer looked at with disdain but is actually making a comeback! Designers around the nation are talking about how warm wood tones, cozy character, textured finishes and even patterned tile floors are defining kitchen style in 2026. Here is an overview from 4 home and real estate publications…
Realtor.com® states that there is a renewed resurgence in wooden kitchens inspired by log cabins and midcentury modern gems. Top trending searches indicate the most popular terms related to kitchens are: “wood kitchens, “vintage kitchens”, honey oak kitchen”, “cozy kitchen” and “medium wood cabinets.” The publication advises that you can even transition your all-white kitchen to the cozier trend by adding more color to the walls or changing out hardware and fixtures.
House Beautiful believes that “tile and texture will be huge” in 2026. Warm, textured woods and woven finishes invite touch, while banquette seating and patterned tile floors elicit cozy, timeless sentiments of simpler days. Statement appliances and decorative vent hoods are also setting the stage to add more personalized character and style.
Good Housekeeping says it simplest: Traditional kitchens “evoke a sense of home.” Their designers assert that minimalist kitchens are becoming less popular as homeowners embrace traditional, functional and personalized spaces. Rebecca Roberts from Method & Moxie explains that “This shift is driven by three key factors: comfort and familiarity, timeless appeal and a reaction against the starkness of minimalism.” Expect more architectural details and fewer clean lines, along with more warm color palettes and fewer cool tones.
Veranda identifies how the kitchen is the hub of the home for not just cooking, but for family chats, homework time and just daily life. With a focus on the kitchen as a “thoughtful, smart and efficient” space, Veranda writes that character and coziness are top priorities. Key concepts include inspired islands (unexpected butcher block or soapstone tops and even moveable versions), seamlessly blended appliances with paneled fronts and the idea that “brown is so back.”
