Senior Spotlight: Fast Facts About… Colorectal Cancer

FYI: Screening saves lives.

Welcome back to the Bobbi Decker Senior Spotlight; you may remember that earlier this year we added a featured called ‘Fast Facts’ to our content line-up in which we highlight an area of key information for older adults and provide 5 simple statements about it. Since March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, we are now pleased to present ‘Fast Facts About Colorectal Cancer.’

#1: Colon cancer is the deadliest cancer in people under age 50, and the 2nd deadliest cancer overall. It is the least funded of major cancer types yet is the only one with increasing mortality.

#2: Colon cancer is most prevalent in those aged 56+, however, cases are drooping in this age group due to better detection.  However, rates of colon cancer are increasing most in those aged 18-44 followed by those aged 45-55.

#3: Colon Cancer screening saves lives. Proper screening is linked to higher survival rates as cancers detected sooner are easier to treat. According to CDC, increasing screening by 80% could reduce colon cancer deaths by over 30% by the year 2030.

#4: There are multiple methods to screen for colon cancer – not just colonoscopies. Talk to your doctor to determine which screening method is best for you.

#5: You can control many of the risk factors for colorectal cancer, such as: diet, exercise, smoking & alcohol use and knowing your family history to navigate screening timelines.

We hope you now have every reason you need to talk to your doctor about colon cancer screening to determine the best plan for you!
