There are two words that have dominated housing design for the last 8 years, in large part due to a popular tv couple who brought the style to HGTV (you have all heard of Chip & Joanna Gaines right?!): modern farmhouse. While most of us think of modern farmhouse as a shiplap wall here and there, barn doors in key access points and a few chicken-themed pillows... the reality is it is SO much more! A new article from Realtor.com® reveals what modern farmhouse is inside & out, and the fall season is an ideal time to actualize it!

INSIDE

Hallmark features of modern farmhouse inside are: barn doors, reclaimed wood, wicker accessories, a classic apron sink, vintage furnishings, large & comfortable furniture, wide plank floors and wrought iron accents.

The Spruce defines modern farmhouse as “…[blending] farmhouse decor with contemporary design, furnishings, and color schemes. Modern farmhouse style evokes feelings of warmth and comfort. It's classic without being fussy and makes elevated designs comfortable, making you want to put your feet up and stay a while.”

OUTSIDE

While the modern farmhouse vibe is easy to see (and feel!) on the inside, what exactly does it entail on the outside? Realtor.com® insists that “a modern farmhouse’s mix of rustic and citified details is immediately apparent in a home’s structure.” You just have to know what you are looking for!

These are the key features of a modern farmhouse-styled exterior: vertical siding, oversized windows, a symmetrical shape (typically two stories with a clean front and any wings/additions off the back), a gable roof, an open-plan layout and a covered porch.
