Senior Spotlight: Fast Facts About… Sodium

Including surprise salt sources you would not expect.

The first month of 2026 is almost behind us and moving forward, we are adding a new feature to our Senior Spotlight! Every once in awhile we are going to pick a topic and provide 5 fast facts about it. This week, our topic is something that applies to virtually every single one of us: sodium!

5 Fast Facts About Sodium Intake

#1: The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300mg of salt per day, ideally 1,500mg or less for most adults.

#2: Managing sodium is a top priority for older adults; too much salt is linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney problems and other risks and health conditions.

#3: Staying well-hydrated is an often-overlooked component of balancing sodium needs (drinking plenty of water helps your body remove excess salt!).

#4: Low-calorie foods can be surprising carriers of salt! Be sure to check the sodium content of: breads, cereals, condiments, processed cheeses and vegetable juices as well as all canned foods.

#5: The very best source for guidance and support related to your sodium intake is your trusted healthcare provider. Please check in with your doctor this year about what dietary needs are most important to you.

We hope you enjoy this new ‘Fast Facts’ feature! Look for more coming soon!

All our best,

Bobbi
