Monday Market Update: Should You Use AI For Home Decorating?

Know the strengths and weaknesses of this game-changing tool.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is considered one of the biggest technological game-changers of all time. With countless applications across virtually every industry and sector of business and personal life, AI is being increasingly used to solve problems, make decisions and identify patterns. But the two driving considerations behind reliance on AI are 1) How ethical is it? And 2) How accurate is it?

For the purposes of today’s topic inspired by the Real Simple read ‘Would You Trust AI to Decorate Your Home?’, ethics are less of a concern, but accuracy is key! AI has the power to impact nearly everything we do – and today we are covering how it can help us design our homes. Given the cost of decorating, the complexities of returning furniture and big-ticket items that may not ‘fit’ and the need for visuals in decision-making – AI can be a powerful tool to refresh and redecorate. Can it really replace an interior designer? Is AI accurate enough to truly help you envision your new space? See where AI flies and where it flops below!

What AI Can Do In Home Design:

- Generate a wide range of styles & layouts from simple prompts

- Suggest optimal furniture arrangements

- Offer space-saving solutions and flow improvement

- Simulate changes – such as moving furniture, adding an area rug, adjusting lighting, previewing design elements in a room together

- Choosing a paint color (identifying by color & brand!)

- Budgeting and breaking down costs by product

Where AI Falls Short In Home Design:

- Showing you real life product recommendations (may give ideas that are unlinked to real products – leading you on a ‘wild goose chase’ to find a like-item

- Understanding design styles (blurring the design trends of farmhouse, mid-century modern, traditional, etc.)

- Providing a personal touch and adding your own personality into the design ideas generated

- Accounting for technical considerations such as materials performance and regulatory constraints (which may apply to permit projects and large-scale redesigns)

The bottom line is that AI can be immeasurably helpful in generating quick visuals, identifying the direction you want to go and narrowing down your options. But as in all things tech-driven, never let the innovation of technology replace the expertise and unrivaled insights of an actual human being.

Stay tuned… we have a feeling that AI will continue to impact all things related to home, real estate, lifestyle and beyond – and you know we will cover it!
