The Skin Cancer Foundation has published a blog in the last few years titled ‘The Sun Keeps Rising: Why Seniors Can’t Skip UV Protection.’ Here are 3 key reasons why:
#1: Think longevity. Mickey Mantle died of cancer at age 63 and famously said, “If I knew I was going to live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself.” It’s never too late to start paying attention to your UV exposure.
#2: Sun exposure is cumulative. Most skin cancers result from sun damage over the course of our lives and since seniors have lived longer – they carry the highest risk. Monitor past damage, prevent future damage.
#3: Epidemiological, biological and molecular data all point to skin cancer as predominantly a disease of the elderly. At least one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. The majority of people who develop melanoma are white men over age 55.
