Senior Spotlight: Travel Trends Among Those Aged 50+

Pandemic travel concerns are down… but financial barriers are up.

March is here, spring is on its way and perhaps you have a trip or two planned in 2023 (and maybe have been on one already!). A new report from AARP titled “2023Travel Trends” reveals that 81% of adults 50-plus who plan to travel this year believe it is safe (compared to 77% in 2021). However, cost concerns are reported by 52% of senior American travelers. Here are five more facts to know about older adult travel trends in 2023:

#1: 61% of those aged 50-plus are planning on domestic-only travel, a 10% increase from last year.

#2: International travel plans and cruises are on the decline, with 10% less older adults anticipating offshore travel (39% in 2023 vs. 49% in 2022).

#3: Travel remains a priority as 62% of those over age 50 are planning at least one leisure trip, with 85% of surveyed travelers considering trip planning among their 3 biggest priorities.

#4: The biggest barriers to travel reported are the cost of travel and the financial unknowns of inflation (needing to save trip money for other expenses).

#5: Average anticipated travel spending is down to an anticipated $6,688 in 2023 compared to $8,369 last year.
