Senior Spotlight: October Is ‘Talk About Prescriptions’ Month

Prescription drugs can have benefits & risks - find your balance!

Science, technology and modern medicine are amazing things. But like all great inventions, the use of medication is just as important as the development of the drug itself. This month, we are highlighting the October awareness theme of ‘Talk About Prescriptions’ month, founded by the National Council on Patient Information and Education in October 1985.

First of all, let me say that medicine has saved my life. As a four-time cancer patient, I believe that faith plus modern medicine has gotten me to where I am today. Second, let me also say that I have experienced the side effects of medications, and found it critical to empower myself with knowledge. Third, the BEST person to talk to about your own medication needs is your trusted doctor or team of them. This blog is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical advice. In fact, this article is intended to help guide conversations with your trusted medical team about your health and treatment.

Did you know that 8 out of 10 older adults take at least one medication, with most taking 3+ medications per day? That is why the BeMedWise developed two critical toolkits for older adults. The first toolkit is called “BeMedWise Seniors: Medication Use Safety Training (MUST) for Older Adults” shares how to stay safe when juggling multiple medications, how not to let medication costs deter use, plus tips for staying on schedule and what to ask your provider. The second toolkit “Be Acetaminophen-Savvy: Older Adults” talks about avoiding acetaminophen overuse which leads to liver damage, as this is a key ingredient in over 600 prescription and over the counter medications in the US.

In addition to your doctor, pharmacists are a wealth of knowledge about medications and interactions. The University of Nevada in Reno offers a great list of 10 questions to ask your pharmacist about your medication(s). Check it out HERE.

Finally, it is important to address the abuse of opioids and the increase of central nervous system depressants. American Addiction Centers offers a data-driven overview of these health challenges, as well as ways to get help. It is important to ensure that your provider addresses a high quality of life and a low risk of addiction when prescribing pain medication and anti-depressants.

Just like almost everything in life – medication use is about balance!  The Bobbi Decker Real Estate Team advocates talking about prescriptions in an educated and ongoing basis. We want you to achieve the highest quality of well-being with the lowest risk and ensure you have the tools to make the best decision for you.

Trust yourself.

Best wishes,
