Senior Spotlight: Secrets From Super Agers
Achieving life longevity & maintaining optimal health.
"The bottom line is, while your genes matter, what you do every day counts just as much, and often more, in determining how long you live and how healthy you stay."
~ Jennifer Hankenson, M.D., Program Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,
Yale New Haven Medical Center
Welcome back to the Bobbi Decker Senior Spotlight! This week we just had to kick off our newest blog with a quote that inspires us all in longevity and well-being. That statement reminds us that no matter the cards we are dealt genetically, there are actions we can choose daily that matter just as much if not more.
A new article from Next Avenue titled ‘Super Agers Show Us How to Live Long and Well’ shares perspective-shifting data from a book by Eric Topol, M.D., a practicing cardiologist, scientist and founder/director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute. Titled “Super Agers: An Evidence-Based Approach to Longevity," this read serves as a blueprint for preventing the ‘big 3’: cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, the approach doesn’t just focus on how long you live – but how many years of life you enjoy with optimal health, meaning without disease or disability.
The book outlines five dimensions that contribute to healthy longevity: lifestyle factors, cells, omic science (collective biological information), artificial intelligence (for medical forecasting and actionable steps) and drugs and vaccines.
The article from Next Avenue compares the advice given in this new book to guidance from two renowned Yale physicians. The best news is that none of what is being revealed is a secret. The keys to longevity and health are rooted in being physically active, not smoking and eating a balanced, intentional diet. Other top tips include adopting smart habits (including ways to keep your brain sharp), getting quality sleep in adequate amounts and maintaining social connections.
We encourage you to explore the Next Avenue article in full here.
When in doubt – start with what you know! Take whatever habit you are familiar with above and adopt it with consistency. For example, we all know that physical exercise is good for us and how to do it – so why not make a regular 3x weekly walking date with a neighbor?
Start small, think big & live long! Let’s do this together!
